Australian Council of Social Services CEO Cassandra Goldie is pleading with the government to increase the JobSeeker payment to a minimum of $65 per day – arguing the rate impacts the lives of millions of people. Prime Minister Scott Morrison will today seek party room support for a permanent increase to the JobSeeker payment after the supplement ends in March. The payment currently sits at $51 per day, however, is set to be revised down to the previous payment of $40 per day, or $560 per fortnight, from March unless the party room backs an increase. “There’s no question that people with a disability, a single parent, students, people who have just become unemployed and people who have been locked out of paid work struggling for a long time are all hanging on the edge of their seat about what the future will be for them,” Ms Goldie told Sky News. “I can’t overstate how significant the party room decision is this morning, we’ve been very clear with the government that this needs to be a permanent and adequate increase”. Ms Goldie said, however, if the rate is cut from $51 “what we will be seeing is a government that has not listened, that is not acting with human dignity and decency”. “If the speculation is that we’re looking at something like $40 per week increase it will just be a deep portrayal and fly in all the face pf evidence of what’s needed here,” she said.
