A 65-year-old man has become the first person charged under the Commonwealth Espionage and Foreign Interference legislation introduced in 2018. The Melbourne man was charged with “preparing for a foreign interference offence contrary to Section 92.4 of the Criminal Code Act 1995,” according to a statement released by the Australian Federal Police. The man has appeared in front of the Melbourne Magistrates court for the offence which carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years. It has been confirmed that the charge was part of a year-long joint investigation between ASIO and the AFP. The arrest is the first made by the Australian Foreign Interference Taskforce – comprised of the AFP and ASIO. AFP Deputy Commissioner Ian McCartney said the taskforce had taken preventative action to disrupt the man at an early stage. "Foreign interference is contrary to Australia’s national interest, it goes to the heart of our democracy,” he said.
