Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced an additional $1.5 billion investment in securing Australia's access to a COVID-19 vaccine in the early months of 2021. The federal government signed two new deals – building on existing commitments to purchase the Oxford University vaccine and a local Queensland University candidate – which will secure another 50 million doses of vaccine candidates. The new candidates will be provided by Novavax and Pfizer, should they be proven safe and effective through clinical trials. “Today is a day when we can look forward to a much better 2021,” Mr Morrison said. “As a government we have never sought to stay stuck in neutral when it comes to dealing with COVID-19, we always need to be looking ahead as to what the next challenge is and ensuring we’re outing in place the mechanisms and solutions to allow Australians to move forward. “As each day passes we become more optimistic, cautious of course.” Mr Morrison also said the next step was establishing a “national vaccines policy” which would go through Cabinet again following consultation with the states and territories, before heading for approval from the National Cabinet. “Because the dissemination of any vaccine is done in partnership with the commonwealth with the states and territories,” he said.
