Queensland authorities are scrambling to contact 250 people who have completed hotel quarantine at the Hotel Grand Chancellor since December 30 as concerns mount over the spread of the United Kingdom COVID-19 variant. Health authorities revealed on Wednesday the UK cluster had grown to six people who were in the hotel, including the cleaner and her partner and four guests in hotel quarantine. All six were situated on level seven – which does not have CCTV surveillance – however, it remains unconfirmed whether the source of their transmission is linked. Officials raised concerns anyone who was in the Grand Chancellor since December 30 could now be carrying the UK strain of the virus but asymptomatic, pushing them to contact all former guests and urge them to undergo another 14 days in isolation. Meanwhile, The Australian this morning reported an alternative plan is being considered by the Queensland government which would see some returned overseas travellers undergo quarantine in mining camps in central and southern parts of the state.
